Appliance maintenance may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of the holiday season, but it may be one of the most important. The holidays are almost upon us, and with that comes big plans for a memory-making season. You’ve probably already got a checklist going, with lists of what you’ll cook and bake, decorations to hang, and how you’ll make this year memorable.
But what if you turn on your oven Thanksgiving morning (after getting takeout for the last few weeks) and it doesn’t heat up? Or you finish a holiday feast only to discover the dishwasher won’t clean? Don’t let household dilemmas ruin your holiday fun. Add these three items to your holiday checklist.
Test Your Equipment in Advance
Consumer Reports gathered data on more than 381,000 appliances and discovered some interesting trends. Among dishwasher owners, 11 percent said their appliances weren’t cleaning correctly. Also, 6 percent of people reported issues with ovens, gas burners, or cooktop elements.
Now is the time to make sure your appliances are in perfect working order before you attempt holiday cooking and baking. So throw in a batch of cookies or your favorite casserole so you know for sure that your oven is up for the holiday challenge. Then when you’re done, throw everything in the dishwasher to test that, too.
If you need appliance maintenance or repairs, it’s much better to know weeks in advance than the day you need them for holiday prep.
Prevent Problems by Deep Cleaning
Deep cleaning is part of most people’s holiday traditions. But it should include more than wiping down neglected baseboards and cleaning the shelves in your fridge. Hit the things people don’t see, too, like the parts that keep your fridge running or the inside of your dishwasher.
Take some time and clean appliances to keep them in tip-top shape. For your refrigerator , use your vacuum and brush attachment to clean out the coils on the back or bottom of the unit. To deep clean your dishwasher , put one cup of white vinegar in an open container in the bottom of your empty appliance and run a cleaning cycle. The vinegar will clean out the goop that’s accumulated in the appliance. Taking these easy cleaning steps will save you repair time and stress.
